MEDIA ADVISORY: Irish Day of Action Dec 15-helping Hurricane Sandy victims with shovels & shoe-boxes

WHAT:
Irish Day of Action for Hurricane Sandy victims in the Rockaways and other Sandy-ravaged areas, when volunteers join together in a hands-on, roll-up your sleeves, clean-up, fix-up effort to aid storm victims.

Christmas Shoe-Box Appeal. People around the city are filling shoe-boxes with hope and holiday cheer for children who lost everything, packing them with school supplies, hygiene items, small clothing items, a book, perhaps a small toy and dropping it off at Irish organizations around NYC, to be delivered as part of the Irish Day of Action

WHERE:
Buses will depart from various NYC locations, taking volunteers, supplies and Christmas Shoe-Boxes to selected Sandy damaged areas.

WHEN:
Sat. Dec. 15, 2012, buses depart from various NYC locations at 7:00 AM, returning at 3:00 PM

WHO:
A coalition of area Irish and Irish American groups, businesses, publications along with the Consulate General of Ireland in New York united to create an Irish response to tragedies left by Hurricane Sandy. A wide range of organizers and volunteers are available to provide their perspectives on the event.

BACKGROUND INFO:
The first "Irish Day of Action" on Nov. 24 mobilized hundreds of volunteers for a day of hard work helping Sandy victims get their homes and lives in order in the Rockaways. Though the Rockaways was chosen in part because so many Irish have settled there,"Day of Action" volunteers help any and all storm victims, and all volunteers are welcome to join to the effort.

Other areas in addition to the Rockaways will be targeted in this Sat.'s  Christmas Irish Day of Action.

In the Irish language this second Irish Day of Action is called "Meitheal na Nollaig" or "A Christmas Gathering of Workers."  The Christmas Shoe-Box appeal is based on similar successful efforts in Ireland.
