Armstrong invented the Ice Halo in October 2007 after falling and hitting her head on the ice during her first curling match. “I slipped on the ice and suffered a serious concussion,”
Forced off the ice for two weeks, Armstrong used her time to invent the Ice Halo protective headband and to apply for its patent. Her invention garnered immediate interest. “As soon as I was back on the ice, wearing my homemade Ice Halo for the first time, the representative of the Barrie Special Olympics curling contacted me to see if they could purchase eighteen Ice Halos for their members,” says Armstrong.
Originally designed as a protective headband for curlers, the Ice Halo was quickly adopted by the skating world, before spreading to athletes in other winter sports, and is now being used to protect toddlers and seniors from the harm of head injuries caused by falls and collisions. “I’m proud to have been able to maintain the quality of my invention over the years and to be able to work with experts in the field of concussion science in order to help reduce brain injuries,” says Armstrong.
About the Ice Halo
The Ice Halo protective headband is available in four adjustable sizes and over thirty different colours and fabrics. It can be custom fitted, matched with outfit or team colours, personalized with corporate logos, and even incorporated into the costumes of competitive skaters. The Ice Halo was tested by Biokinetics, a top blunt impact injury test facility, and proven to reduce impact force by 250G. Curlers and ice skaters from Newfoundland to California have hailed the Ice Halo as, “The most fashionable piece of safety equipment you’ll ever own.”
