Erin Templeton officially started making leather accessories in 1999, while studying shoemaking at Cordwainer's College in London, England. “I started taking scraps from the bins at school, making cuffs and selling them on Portobello Street for spending money,“ Erin recalls. Though it wasn’t until 2002, when she had the opportunity to rent the boiler room of the Modernize Tailors in historic Chinatown, Vancouver, that Erin Templeton Leather Bags and Accessories was born.
After 5 years of blood, sweat, tears and many laughs, in 2007 the tailors relocated and Erin’s storefront, studio and carefully curated vintage selection at 511 Carrall Street came to be. Keeping the traditions of the space alive, all designs are lovingly handmade in-house with either new or recycled leathers. Thanks to her charm, Erin herself has become a neighborhood treasure with many of locals proud to see her flourish. “I was chatting with some locals recently and they were telling me how great it is that I am still here, they weren’t sure I would make it but were very happy I did,” Erin giggles and adds, “I am not sure how I did it either, everyone thought I was nuts.” Armed with a tenacious spirit and quality, timeless designs, we have no doubt how she did and that she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
For most this is where they’d say, “the rest is history,” but for Erin Templeton 10 years is just the beginning. With her collections available in stores all over Canada and the US and clients from all over the world snapping up what they can from erintempleton.com, we can’t wait to see what else this simply irresistible designer will come up with next.
