Follow on Google News | Golf Coaches to be Offered Free Skin Cancer Screenings at National ConventionImportance of early detection and prevention of skin cancer to be emphasized
Representatives from Sun SafeTee will be providing sun protection educational materials designed specifically for golfers and will distribute wide brim hats that have been donated by Coolibar. Staff from Las Vegas Dermatology will be providing the skin screenings. “This is an important opportunity to deliver the message of sun protection for golfers and to provide an opportunity for the early detection of skin cancer” said Mark Wishner, President and Founder of Sun SafeTee. “By increasing awareness about sun protection we not only provide a great service to the coaches, we are also paving the way for them to carry that message back to their student athletes.” The rates of skin cancer continue to rise in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, is the most frequently occurring cancer in young adults age 25 to 29. One person dies every hour from melanoma. Since golfers spend a significant amount of time in the sun, they can have a higher risk than the general population of developing skin cancer. Gregg Grost, CEO of the GCAA said “As much time as our coaches and their student athletes spend outside in the elements we understand the vital importance of protecting ourselves from sun damage. We are pleased with our continuing relationship with Mark Wishner and SunSafeTee. We are thankful for the skin damage screening that they are providing for our membership during our national convention”. “Educating young golfers is important for two reasons”, Wishner added. “First because the sun exposure we get at an early age, is what can cause skin problems as an adult. So minimizing UV exposure can have a beneficial affect down the road. Secondly, the sooner we can get young golfers to incorporate good sun protection techniques, the higher the likelihood that they will continue to use those skills throughout their life. The GCAA is a great partner in helping deliver the message of sun protection and skin cancer prevention to young golfers.” #### About Sun SafeTee The Sun SafeTee Program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the only nationwide organization dedicated to sun protection education and skin cancer protection for golfers.
