Sustainability award for local restaurant

A New Forest restaurant and hotel has scooped a top accolade at this year’s ‘Brilliance in Business Awards’ for its commitment to the environment.

PRLog - Dec. 5, 2012 - The Mill at Gordleton won the Sustainable Business Award, sponsored by the New Forest National Park Authority, for its innovative approach to saving energy and commitment to purchasing local produce.

To reduce energy bills, owner Liz Cottingham installed a heat exchange unit in the adjoining river bed. It provides enough power for 80 per cent of the business’s hot water.

Staff are passionate about using local New Forest Marque produce from farmers and producers in Boldre, Lymington, Eling and the Solent and have recently created a kitchen garden on site.

Another prominent area they are working hard to reduce is waste. All individual soaps and shampoo sachets have been replaced with dispensers, a compost bin has been introduced for kitchen waste and items such as cardboard, paper, plastics and oil are recycled.

In the summer The Mill helped launch a National Park project to involve communities in river conservation. A sculpture made of glass, plastic and copper pipes from the restaurant and hot water heating system was turned into the ‘Millings Chandelier’ by  Lymington-based artist Trudi Lloyd-Williams. The sculpture flows up and down with the course of the river.

Liz Cottingham, owner of The Mill, said: ‘We are delighted to be winners of this award. It is great for the team’s hard work to be recognised in such a prestigious way and for all their efforts in helping reduce The Mill’s impact on the environment.’

Julian Johnson, Chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority who presented the award, said: ‘We are pleased to support an award that encourages sustainability - it is at the heart of what we do as a National Park. The Mill has embraced new technology and has shown a commitment to reducing its energy and supporting local producers - they are a worthy winner.’

Winners of this year’s Brilliance in Business awards were announced at Careys Manor Hotel in Brockenhurst on 28 November. The awards were presented by the New Forest Business Partnership President The Hon Ralph Montagu.

Runners up were Macdonald Elmers Court Hotel and Resort and New Forest Marque member Spice ‘n’ Easy.
