Dec. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- The Holidays can be a tough time for many people for a variety of reasons, including family strain, financial stresses, and time management issues. But it is often not recognized that the holidays and winter in general can be the cause of significant depression in some people.

The time change initiated at the beginning of November alone can be the reason why many people begin to feel sleepy earlier in the day and lacking in energy. Add to that the pressures of the holidays, where it is important to many to try to ensure a time filled with joy and family togetherness as well as the financial stress that can result from the focus on material things during this time of year, and the descent into depression can be crushing.

It is especially tough to feel with negative feelings during the holidays because of the expectation that the spirit of the season will generate unadulterated feelings of thankfulness and happiness. Repressing these feelings is not a healthy way to handle them. So what should one do when feeling down, depressed, or lethargic?

The first and most important thing to do is to find someone trustworthy to share these feelings with and gain support and understanding. Expressing what is troubling to you and being free to release your emotions can be a big relief. Having a support system is the best thing you can do to alleviate your feelings of depression. If you reach out, you may find that others struggle with the same type of problems and may be handling their situation in a healthier way. You can learn a lot from each other. If you cannot find someone in your immediate circle of friends and family, you can always seek out professional help for this reason. You would have access to an antidepressant, if that is deemed necessary to help you cope and get through the season.

Secondly, because seasonal depression is a common experience, you may want to explore natural solutions to your symptoms. One way to do this is to find a way to increase the amount of natural light you have access to throughout the day. Take a break during your lunch hour and take a walk outside, especially on days that are nice and sunny.

Because of the importance of natural light in dealing with seasonal depression, you may want to explore whether a light therapy lamp would be beneficial to you. These special lamps are made to replicate natural sunlight. It is often recommended to sit by one of these lamps for at least 30 minutes every morning. This is believed to stimulate serotonin production in the brain, which helps to promote a good mood and an increased energy level. Recognizing your depression is the first step towards getting the help and support you need. And finding simple solutions to avert your symptoms can go a long way towards helping you get the most out of life, no matter what season it is.
