This prestigious award is awarded to one person from every state’s chapter each year for those who are diligent in their volunteerism for altruistic purposes.
By: Craig Corbel The AMTA is the American Massage Therapy Association. They provide membership to massage therapists as a way to provide benefits to members and advocacy for the profession. They feature tools helping massage therapists grow and thrive within the profession. The Chapter Meritorious Award is something that has been awarded on an annual basis since 1969. Only one member of the AMTA for each chapter can be nominated for the award. The qualifications include being an active AMTA member for at least one full year. The 2012 award from the New York chapter has been awarded to Eugene Wood, who is a full-time licensed massage therapist out of New York City, New York. Eugene Wood has two locations for NYC Massage in which he can serve patients. This includes the Institute of Physical Therapy in New York City as well as offers Wantagh massage at the Center for the Alignment of Body, Mind and Spirit in Wantagh on Long Island. He is also committed to offering massage at the home for the convenience of the patient. Eugene’s experience in massage encompasses over 20 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has worked with a number of large organizations. For his massage therapy, he graduated from the Swedish Institute in NYC and is the Education Chair of the AMTA New York Chapter. The AMTA Meritorious Award was given to this NYC Massage Therapist because of his volunteerism throughout NYC and Long Island. He is committed to sharing his knowledge with other massage therapists and is always learning new techniques as a way to help his patients. Many massage therapists in the city that work closely with Eugene Wood were not surprised to learn he had been awarded the Chapter Meritorious Award. “I couldn’t imagine why he wouldn’t be awarded it,” says one massage therapist in Queens. “I have learned a lot from him personally.” Not only does Eugene serve as the Education Chair for the AMTA in New York, but he is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Wantagh. The Wantagh massage specialist has been able to help many patients who have suffered from significant back and neck pain due to injury or illness.
