MWFs are used to reduce heat and friction and to remove metal particles in industrial machining and grinding operations. There are many MWF formulations that range from straight oils to water-based fluids. Water-
Many of the workers at risk for exposure can be found across the Mid-Atlantic region where Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC) helps to identify these microbial pathogens and contaminants.
Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, has extensive experience offering monitoring and prevention services to help protect against exposure to microbial elements. “Workers can be exposed to breathing contaminated aerosols when working with MWFs,” reported Dr. White. “Additional exposure routes can come from directly touching metal parts, tools, and machining equipment that has metalworking fluids on them. The health and safety professionals at SEHC can test for microbial contaminants and related microbial toxins such as endotoxins and mycotoxins in MWFs. Air testing will also determine if workers could be breathing contaminated air that may possess high levels of these materials,” she continued.
SEHC has sponsored an educational video about metalworking fluids and exposure risks to microbial contaminants that can be seen at:
