PRLog - Dec. 4, 2012 - ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Isaac delivered some of the toughest product-testing environments that Atlanta-based Radarsign™—the manufacturer of the world’s first armored driver feedback signs—has ever documented. Installed in more than 30 locations along the Northeastern seaboard and over Lake Pontchartrain (New Orleans, La.), in Sandy and Isaac’s paths, the armored signs survived unscathed. Paired with solar power panels, Radarsign’s driver speed signs were instantaneously up and running, able to serve the traffic-calming needs of communities that were without power or law enforcement to meet all needs.

With the end of the 2012 hurricane season (Nov. 30), municipalities, transportation engineers and traffic planners identifying traffic-calming best practices large and small by studying successes like these:

The Causeway Commission, New Orleans > The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway > Hurricane Isaac

Daily conditions: High wind – Saltwater – Rain – Sea fowl
Each week, 42,000 cars cross Lake Pontchartrain on the longest bridge in the world that comes complete with salt water, gusty lake winds and seasonal hurricanes. While Hurricane Isaac (Aug. 2012) caused an estimated $3 million in damages to the Causeway bridge alone (signage, structure and more), the Radarsign driver speed sign—mounted at the midpoint of the bridge—withstood the storm, which delivered sustained winds of 80 mph and gusts of more than 100 mph. Delaware DOT > Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Rehoboth Beach, Slaughter Beach > Superstorm Sandy

With only 117 miles of coastline in Delaware, the resort towns of Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach were among the hardest-hit places in the state. According to Michael Somers, Senior Transportation Planner with the Delaware Department of Transportation, all 30 of the Radarsign driver speed signs withstood the winds and rain.

“We got slapped around a bit, but mostly on the coast. All of your signs survived unscathed, and we had winds up to 80 mph. I expected to find them all over the countryside.”

“Sand, salt water and wind can be the death knell for electronic devices,” said Charlie Robeson, Radarsign co-founder and managing partner. “Sandy and Isaac certainly confirmed that our armored design can withstand some of the most extreme environmental conditions. Just as importantly, because the signs are functioning—need no repairs, replacement or attention of any kind—community leaders can focus their resources on larger rebuilding efforts.”

Designed to be watertight and bullet resistant, the Radarsign product housing is manufactured with commercial, jet-grade aluminum, which is welded together into a custom shape and finished with a white powder coating. The result: armored driver speed signs that meet NEMA standards and are hurricane worthy.

“Our driver feedback signs were specifically engineered and ‘built for purpose,’” said Robeson. “We didn’t buy an ‘off the shelf’ cabinet [or housing] and make our product fit inside.”

Radar speed signs from Radarsign are installed across the North America, with many operating in areas known for extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes. Worry-free dependability in times of natural disaster make Radarsign a smart, cost-effective traffic calming investment.
