At the Rotherham NHS Diagnostic Centre, in Greasbrough Road, 2,400 people a year have DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry)
Joanne Roebuck, who manages the centre, said: “Abigail is wonderful. She came to work for us 18 months ago and she was marvellous with the patients, particularly as people are often anxious. They may have had a fall and injured themselves and now have a concern that there is a wider health issue.
“Abigail is friendly and caring as she helps people to get ready for their scans and we felt that she should be given the opportunity to train and become the first care assistant in Care UK to qualify to carry out scans.”
Abigail completed the training programme and has been carrying out her own scan list for a month. Joanne said: “The feedback has been universally positive. Consultants and nurses have praised the quality of her scans, Rotherham Foundation Trust employees have praised her work and the patient satisfaction surveys show she is very popular with visitors.
“Most importantly, we have been able to increase the number of people receiving the scans by around 20 percent and that cuts waiting times and lessens anxiety.”
Abigail said: “It is great to know that I can offer a really valuable service to local people and I love being part of such a caring team – you always know that they are there to support you and help you develop as a carer and as a person.”
