Dec. 4, 2012 - PRLog -- In the wake of the bad weather that has ravaged the country over the last few weeks, tens of thousands of people have been affected by flooding or have been on high alert. Flood warnings have been issued to many caravan parks across the country with some parks taking precautionary advice and evacuating.

Normally 1 in 20 of all claims made to Shield are attributed to flood-related damage alone, but this year’s numbers are expected to be much higher and Shield is urging all caravanners to be prepared and properly insured.

Here are Shield’s top tips and advice on how to avoid flooding, stay safe and minimise damage when the bad weather hits…

1. Think about flooding when choosing your site.

According to DEFRA around 28 percent of caravan and camping sites in England and Wales are at flood risk from rivers and the sea. This is undoubtedly because the picturesque landscape makes them popular places for pitching.

When choosing a site, Shield advises you consider flood avoidance and your proximity to expanses of water, such as the sea, lakes or rivers. You may get to enjoy a beautiful waterside vista, but you’re also vulnerable to flood damage if the water level rises rapidly. Shield recommends pitching on higher ground and looking for areas with good water drainage.

2. Have a plan

Make a plan whenever you arrive on site and take a few minutes to work out an exit. Shield also suggests checking that high ground is easily accessible. Many parks in high risk areas will have a flood evacuation plan in place, so remember to ask the park for more information.

3. Consider an escape route in case the worst happens.

Should you find yourself in a caravan submerged in rising water it’s unlikely that the door will provide an easy exit due to the force of the water against it. If possible open a window, so should the situation worsen, you have a means of escape.

4. Consider your storage location

Whilst caravan storage sites are well protected against thieves, they can’t keep out the worst of the weather. Check whether your preferred storage facility is in a flood risk area. Research sites and choose one that is at minimal risk.

5. Keep an eye on the weather

We are known as a nation that loves to talk about it, but amazingly most Brits still get caught out when bad weather hits.

Be vigilant - look at weather reports and flood warnings and stay safe. It doesn’t have to be raining for there still to be a risk of flooding as water can travel from other areas. Check out http://www.shieldtotalinsurance.co.uk/touring-caravan-insurance for free flood risk alerts.

Stuart Craig, Shield’s Sales and Marketing Manager says: “ It always helps to be prepared for when bad weather strikes. We strongly advise all caravanners to ensure their vehicles are stored or pitched securely and we advise everyone to consider investing in a caravan insurance policy that protects their assets in the event of a flood.”

Shield policies provide flexible, specialist cover for major events such as storm and flood damage as well as other incidents including vandalism, fire and theft.
