Howard spends a lot of time in Boston and noticed the large number of homeless people. He began to talk with his trainer at the gym about taking action to help the problem. His trainer suggested he bring his efforts closer to home and work to provide clothing for needy people in Nashua. Howard said, “The worst thing in the world is to be uncomfortable or injured due to harsh weather conditions. Having the correct type of clothing makes the winter just a little more bearable.”
Howard and Best Fitness have a goal of collecting 500 items by January 1, 2012. The first wave of donations has brought in close to 200 articles of clothing. They are also working to reach out to other businesses for partnership in this effort. They are specifically looking for jackets, hats, gloves and socks. Howard explained that the hats should mostly be men’s hats because people tend to donate hats to women and children, but men are sometimes forgotten. He is also hoping that people stay within the guidelines of the request.
Fournier said, “ We continue to be proud of our members. Phil is the perfect example of someone who knows how to take action to make a difference. We believe in our community and love when our members feel the same way. We are hopeful this clothing drive will provide for many needy people this winter.”
Howard is currently completing an internship at a hospital cardiology wing. He also works part-time at a local restaurant. He plans to pursue a career in cardiovascular sonography.
