“This is a futuristic detective novel that will appeal to men ages 25 to 60. It will also appeal to readers of long-form novels who like a challenge and are not scared off by a 760-page book,” says Jerry Freeman, born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, and who considers himself a true child of the American heartland.
Among the media, many believe that the long-form novel is becoming extinct. However, Jerry vigorously disagrees, and says, “I think this new entry lets the media know the form is still viable and interesting. People, who have read Ann Rynd’s novel, Atlas Shrugged, will be intrigued by this opposite look at a futuristic world controlled by corporations.”
Jerry further believes “detective novel readers will like the aging detective, and his young and lethal African-American female partner as they take on both corporate America and the underground resistance organization in their efforts to solve the case.” He adds that “In A Kick-Ass Sentimental Mood” offers a good read, presents likeable characters, and serves up a delectable fare of action and romance. “Most importantly, it offers a look at how our world be if we’re not vigilant,” says Jerry.
Another thing that makes Jerry’s new book stand out from the millions currently on display on Amazon.com, according to Publisher Beasley, is that the cover has a rather unusual design, as opposed to the usual slick cover on most books. “It’s actually an illustration from a African American artist, Christopher Harrison. As a publisher, going with this kind of stylized art as a cover is a bit risky, but all of the guys in our informal research liked the cover. And, since men are our target readers we decided to go with it,” says Beasley.
For the past 10 years, Jerry has worked as the senior editor for the state’s African American newspaper, the 79-year-old Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder.
