Dec. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- (Monroe, MI) Rockford Greene International CEO and co-founder Phil La Duke wrapped up his 2012 speaking season with a guest lecture for Tulane University’s School of Public Health. The noted author, blogger, and speaker presented Going Out of Business: Why Organizations Should Dismantle the Safety Function.

“Universities tend to want something controversial,” La Duke says, “so I thought, what would be most alarming to students working on a masters degree?” La Duke spent 2012 doing considerably less public speaking than in past years. “I took a bit of time away from the public circuit this year,” explains La Duke. “I was getting more and more requests for private corporate events, but even more than that, I really wanted to take some time away and focus on my writing.”

La Duke is a monthly columnist and contributing editor at Fabricating and Metalworking magazine and has contributed to ISHN and Facility Safety Management magazines. In October, ISHN named La Duke one of the “young (or relatively young) up-and-coming thought leadership in worker safety.” In addition to his personal blog, www.philladuke.wordpress.com, La Duke makes weekly posts to www.rockfordgreeneinternational.wordpress.com and contributes guest posts to www.monsterthinking.com along with the popular Australian worker safety blog, Health and Safety Risk Management (http://www.safetyrisk.com.au.)

Highlights of La Duke’s 2012 engagements include trips to the podium at the National Safety Council in Orlando, the Michigan Safety Conference, and a guest lecture at Wayne State University.

“I love speaking at the Michigan Safety Conference, it’s where I started as a safety speaker. And of course I couldn’t refuse a Devil’s Night gig in Detroit,” says La Duke.

2012 had many memorable moments including an unscheduled speech at the Great Plaines Safety Conference in Kearney, NE, where La Duke was asked to fill in at the last minute when another speaker failed to appear. “I was slated to present A Culture of Myths (at the conference) in the afternoon and thought I would check out one of the morning sessions. When the speaker failed to show, I jokingly asked if the conference organizer wanted me to ‘wing’ it,” La Duke recalls. “They were in a bind and we polled the audience and people said they wanted to hear me speak. I had Why We Violate the Rules on a memory stick because I had just delivered it at a private safety executive session, so I presented it and it was really well received. All things considered it was a colossal success; I had a great time with a great audience.”

What’s next for La Duke? That’s not entirely clear. “I’ve made preliminary commitments to speak at the Michigan Safety Conference in April and to be a keynote speaker for an international oil and gas exploration conference in May. But beyond that I have abstracts pending for the American Society of Safety Engineers and for Loss 2013 but I won’t know whether or not they have accepted my abstracts for a month or so. I also hope to submit additional abstracts to speak at international venues across the globe” explains La Duke.

In addition to his speeches, La Duke indicates that he intends to continue to write his monthly column, The Safe Side for Fabricating and Metalworking magazine, guest blog for MonsterTHINKING.com and SafetyRisk.AU.com in, and contribute to various safety magazines.
