“In this day of electronic mail, nobody will come across faded letters buried in attics to bring the past alive. Come with me, let me share with you a kaleidoscope of recent history.” – Author John Jessen, Only Trees Need Roots A Dane born in Hong Kong, John Jessen is the son of a successful Taipan, whose family has connections to the Far East going back several generations. With the onset of World War II and his father’s ship being captured by Chinese pirates, young Jessen experiences more adventures in his youth than most have experienced in a lifetime. After the death of his young brother in the Red Sea, 9-year-old Jessen leaves his grandparents in Switzerland to travel ALONE through Hitler’s Germany and on to Russia, where he boards the Trans-Siberian Express to Manchuria. En route to joining his parents in Shanghai, his Japanese train to his ship in Dalian is attacked by Chinese freedom fighters. Jessen witnesses the brutal Japanese occupation of the war-torn city, offering a rare glimpse of Shanghai by a Dane. As a 12-year-old, he participates in the derailing of a Japanese freight train and smuggles food through enemy lines. The post-war years in crime-riddled Shanghai paint a dark picture of the black market, rampant inflation, flirtations with Chinese concubines, a visit to a luxurious brothel, and horror tales from survivors of Japanese prison camps. Experiencing several different cultures, Jessen shares his exciting adventures during perhaps the most turbulent and transformational times in our world’s history. After his father’s death, he works his way to Europe at age 14 on a British troop carrier. Jessen attends school in Switzerland, puts in military service in the Royal Danish Navy, and later works in 47 countries, having been shot at in Guatemala and Nicaragua. He is attacked by a machete swinging drunk in the Dominican Republic, is innocently thrown incommunicado into a black hole by a Brazilian dictator, and is harassed in the Middle East. But for all the dangerous and hair-raising experiences in John Jessen’s life, nothing is as traumatic compared to losing his son to cancer.
