Rocco Leo Gaglioti: Responsibility to Humanity

Rocco Leo Gaglioti gives back to a world that has given him so much. "When you are in the public eye it is important to also be a voice for those that can't speak for themselves and use your public face to help others, not just to get more."

From World Water Day and the Clean Water Initiative ran by the United Nations that addresses the very serious issue of countries that do not have water fit for consumption to Miss and Mr. Deaf International, an organization that empowers deaf people around the world and helps give them a voice that many never hear, Rocco Leo Gaglioti makes sure he is giving back to a world that has given him plenty of advantages.

“I think it is important that people give back to others, especially when they have been given opportunities that put them in the public spotlight”, Gaglioti said. “It is everyone’s responsibility to be a good ‘citizen of the world’ and help those less fortunate”.

Gaglioti’s philanthropic endeavors have taken him all around the world in his effort to give back.

Addressing a body of the Ukrainian government in April of 2012, Rocco spoke about the ills that plague the people and government agencies of this and other countries. He did so at the risk of never being asked back, but did not care.

“It was important to me that someone not a part of the system there call out what may be considered ‘problems’ with the way things were ran because the people there do not necessarily have free rein to say things for themselves without dire consequences”, Gaglioti stated.

Rocco is Vice President of The Miss and Mister Deaf International Pageant, an organization that pledges to empower, enhance and support today’s ever changing and ever growing community of Deaf Women and Men.

“American Sign Language was my first language since I grew up as a child of a CODA. [Children of Deaf Adults] I have seen my mother, who is an exceptional, educated woman try to help others that may have had a more difficult time trying to find their way in a world that may not give them the same considerations that hearing people receive. She was my inspiration in this endeavor and still continues to be to this day”, Gaglioti said.

Gaglioti will be hosting an event in Portland, Oregon in December for an organization called Soles4Souls.org that helps provide shoes for children and adults to be able to attend school or work to provide an education or living for their families.

“When I found out there were kids that don’t have a single pair of shoes or parents that have to tie makeshift material to their feet to be able to just go to work to feed their families, I was shocked. We don’t realize how fortunate we are in this country; there are organizations that can help out families in need. Other countries don’t have those internal services to be able to help their own country men and women and depend on outside organizations to help”, Gaglioti explained.

Whatever the cause Gaglioti gets involved in, Rocco makes sure that he does what he considers ‘his part’ in making this world a better place for everyone, not just his own inner circle.
