Passports with Purpose 2012 Raises $100,000 to Build Five Wells with Water.org

Travel Blogging Community Comes Together During Fifth Annual Online Fundraiser from November 28, 2012 to December 11, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 28, 2012 - More than 200 travel bloggers around the world have signed up to participate in the annual online fundraiser, Passports with Purpose (PwP). The philanthropic effort began today at 12:01 am EST and ends on December 11, 2012 at 11:59 pm EST on www.PassportswithPurpose.org. These travel bloggers will raise USD $100,000 for five wells in Haiti through a partnership with Water.org.

Join a Promise to Haiti

For the past 21 years, Water.org has been working in partnership with people in developing countries to help them meet their own water and sanitation needs. Founded by Gary White and Matt Damon, Water.org empowers local communities as invested owners, ensuring that the new, clean water source lasts for generations to come.

“Ready access to clean water has so many positive ripple effects. That’s why when a community drills a well, they aren’t just drilling for water. They’re drilling for opportunity: for the opportunity to go to school, for the opportunity to go to work, and for the opportunity to be healthy,” said Nicole Wickenhauser, senior development manager at Water.org.

Each well will serve an average of 370 people in Boucan Carre and Mirebalais. The most affected are women and children. “Children are the most susceptible to water-related diseases like diarrhea, and women and children bear the primary responsibility for collecting water and for the domestic chores associated with its use,” continues Nicole.

Passports with Purpose’s goal to build five wells is part of Water.org’s 18-month program to build 20 wells, benefitting 20 communities. PwP calls on travel bloggers to join (http://passportswithpurpose.org/2012-bloggers/) co-founder Matt Damon in his promise (http://water.org/post-v/building-the-future-promise/) to Haiti.

How Passports with Purpose Works

The success of Passports with Purpose centers around travel bloggers who secure and post a description of a prize, along with details of the fundraiser, on their travel blogs. All the Passports with Purpose prize posts are linked to the Donate (http://passportswithpurpose.org/donate/) page. For each $10 tax-deductible donation on the site, a person can enter to win a prize of their choice. Donations for multiple prizes and multiple $10 increments are acceptable, as well as donations without entering for a prize. On December 18, a winner will be randomly selected and notified for each prize. Donations go to the 2012 beneficiary, Water.org.

Each year a group of sponsors help jump-start the project with their donations. In 2012, Passports with Purpose is thrilled to partner with platinum sponsor Expedia.com (http://www.expedia.com); gold sponsor TripIt (http://www.tripit.com); silver sponsor TBEX (http://www.tbexcon.com); and bronze sponsors HomeAway (http://www.homeaway.com/), Travellerspoint (http://www.travellerspoint.com/), Hostel Bookers (http://www.hostelbookers.com/) and Go with Oh (http://www.gowithoh.com/).

In addition to being a platinum sponsor, Expedia.com captured the story behind the travel blogging community’s annual fundraiser as part of the Find Yours (http://www.expedia.com/p/info-other/findyours.htm) campaign. The Find Your Purpose video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUK1N5RfBio) of Pam Mandel, Debbie Dubrow and Michelle Duffy’s visit to one of the libraries in Zambia built as a result of last year’s fundraiser showcases the passion and purpose behind the travel blogging community’s goal to create long-lasting good for people who live in the places travelers visit.

Amazing Prizes for a Great Cause

In its fifth year, the Passports with Purpose participating bloggers continue to raise the bar with amazing prizes, some valued in the thousands of dollars, with others curated specifically for Passports with Purpose. Sample prizes include:
