Although keeping up with the latest trends in the dental world is important, there is a greater underlying principle that is at the heart of everything they do; honesty. In this ever-changing world where new information is coming at us daily, the biggest part of their job is separating fact from fiction and doing what they believe is best for their patients.
“As dental professionals, we have a duty not only to offer our patients the best treatments, but to be completely honest with them on which treatments we believe will be most effective, and which ones are not yet proven, and therefore involve greater risks,” Dr. Johnson says. “This means that when a patient asks about a certain procedure they may have read about recently, we sometimes need to say ‘no, we are not comfortable doing this yet’ because it requires further research to know if it the best way to go.”

“We try to operate our office with the utmost integrity, and this includes not only doing right by our patients, but by the world we live in as well,” Dr. Johnson continues. “This is why we are drawing upon ideas from the Eco-Dentistry Association (http://www.ecodentistry.org/
Drs. Johnson and Risbrudt also acknowledge that even though they are seasoned dental professionals, they do not always have a definitive answer to every conceivable controversy that is circulating out there. In these cases especially, they believe that honesty and transparency is always the best policy.
“Being a professional does not mean we have the answers in every situation. And part of operating with integrity is having the humility to acknowledge this fact. Sometimes, we are going to tell you that this is what we believe ‘based on the best research that is available’ at this time. The bottom line is that we care about the health of our patients above all else, so we will always be transparent with them and present all the facts that we know, allowing them to make their best informed decision about what treatments they want to have.”
