David and Margaret Carlberg to Be Honored as “2012 Friend of the Conservancy”

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Nov. 23, 2012 – The Bolsa Chica Conservancy (http://www.bolsachica.org) will honor the Orange County Water District (OCWD) (http://www.ocwd.com) with the “2012 Conservator of the Year” award at the annual Conservator of the Year luncheon at the Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 11:30a.m. Attendees at the event include the local community, elected officials and past recipients.  

This prestigious award is presented to an individual, business or organization that promotes or sponsors the ideals of environmental conservation through innovative ideas, scientific discovery, conservation projects, education, technological improvements and breakthroughs.  This year, the OCWD is being acknowledged for its leadership in environmental conservation in groundwater quality, reliability and sustainability. The OCWD is also being recognized for its commitment and dedication to conservation through its highly acclaimed Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), Hotel/Motel Water Efficiency Program, the Children’s Water Education Festival, the Arundo donax removal program in the Santa Ana Watershed, the Prado Wetlands treatment system and animal habitat, dairy-engineered wetlands project and various groundwater clean-up programs throughout Orange County

“We are pleased to recognize the Orange County Water District for its outstanding work in managing and maintaining the groundwater basin in northern Orange County, which supplies up to 75 percent of the water needs of more than 2.4 million residents in 21 cities,” said Mark Gaughan, chairman of the board of the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. “Water is a critical issue in our times and OCWD has demonstrated its leadership in groundbreaking technology and initiatives in water conservation, sustainability and youth education,” added Gaughan.

Honored at the luncheon also, will be David and Margaret Carlberg who have been selected as recipients of the “2012 Friend of the Conservancy” award. Together, the Carlbergs have dedicated the last four decades to advocating the preservation of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. David Carlberg, a retired microbiology professor from California State University, Long Beach, is a noted author of several books and research scholar on the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.  His most recent book is “Bolsa Chica – Its History from Prehistoric Times to the Present.”  Margaret Carlberg, a chemist and educator at heart, was recognized in 1997 by the California Science Teachers Association as High School Science Teacher of the Year.

The luncheon is sponsored by the Boeing Company, Disneyland Resort, Southern California Gas Company, AES Huntington Beach, Quiksilver, the Orange County Water District and the Metropolitan Water District.
