connectingvibes* Dance Company Invited to Perform at 2013 Grenada National Dance Festival
London-based dance company connectingvibes* get the opportunity to return to the 'land of its birth', Grenada.
PRLog - Nov. 23, 2012 - SOUTH EAST, U.K. -- connectingvibes* has been invited to perform at the National Dance Festival of Grenada from 29 May – 2 June 2013. This festival has great significance to the dance company as an invitation to the millennium event resulted in the birth of connectingvibes*.
This time round is extra special for the company as the company will be joining forces with sister company, Connecting Vibes USA, which is based in Baltimore and is directed by the original founder of connectingvibes* UK, John McQueen. Performing at the same event will be a first for the two companies. Indeed, it will be the first time that dancers from the two companies will have the opportunity to meet in person.
In 2000, connectingvibes* was just an idea, a project to showcase the talents of young dancers, a unique partnership between IRIE! dance theatre (http://www.iriedancetheatre.org/) and City and Islington College. And, the dance company is led by the Co-Artistic Directors of connectingvibes*, Rosie Lehan, a Senior Dance Lecturer at City & Islington College, and Beverley Glean, the Artistic Director of IRIE! dance theatre. Ironically, Beverley Glean herself is of Grenadian heritage.
“Although, I have lived most of my life in the UK, Grenada holds a special place in my heart and so I’m especially proud of the association that connectingvibes* has with the island. I’m excited for the company to have this opportunity because I know, from experience, what a profound effect it will have on the individuals members of the company and the company as a whole.” Beverley Glean, Co-Artistic Director, connectingvibes*
Now, 12 years on, and all the initial ideas have developed as young dancers, musicians, photographers, designers and technicians have joined forces to complete ten exciting tours including "Push de Tempo", "One Blood", "Treading the Baseline" and the latest production – “When in Doubt”. It is this latest production that the company will perform at the festival.
Former members of connectingvibes* have gone on to start their own companies, worked as freelance practitioners and for a diverse range of companies including Adzido Pan African Dance Ensemble, DV8 Physical Theatre, IRIE! dance theatre, Green Candle, and the Welsh National Opera among other others.
Of the journey to date, Rosie Lehan said:
“The last 12 years have been amazing – tight in terms of funding and hard work but really rewarding! The opportunity to attend the 2013 Grenada National Dance Festival is like history repeating itself. We’re really excited about not just performing at the festival but also about the profound effect that we know the experience will have on the dancers and their careers as artists.”
connectingvibes* are now on a mission to raise the airfares and associated costs for seven company members to attend the festival. The company has set up a fund raising campaign on the Please Fund Us (http://www.pleasefund.us) crowd funding website.
