Cancer is the second leading cause in deaths this year with more than 1,600 deaths per day. The goal of the program is to help reduce the amount of deaths caused by cancer by raising money through the selling of candles. This is made even clearer by their slogan “Burn A Candle, Save A Life”. “Every one buys candles to burn, why not burn candles to save lives?” say’s Ryan E. Donovan, founder of Candles 4 Cancer.
She has not always been an ambitious candle maker however; the now 24-year old veteran is a former IT Manager with a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. But how did those credentials lead to this endeavor? “After the economy broke, my mother was laid off after 7 years of commitment to her company, and job opportunities were scarce around my post in California . As a child we would spend quality time making candles, and finally one day the two components just clicked…If we couldn’t find her a career, we would build one.” The addition of supporting “The American Cancer Society” came from their very up, close and personal experience with the disease. Ryan’s mother (Rena L. Donovan) successfully beat cancer when Ryan was just a child and the two have supported the foundation ever since.
Based out of Las Vegas the small start up company is making a name for themselves. Their goal is to not only make an impact on a world with less cancer, but to also become large enough to create more jobs for the struggling economy. “I want the ability to employ and help people like us who have been left destitute by the decreasing job market”- Ryan Donovan .
