The European Christmas Markets Are Open for Business

All the major European cities now open the Christmas markets season. Christmas markets are a tradition of European cities, being a great opportunity to discover local customs and purchase traditional products sold at Christmas stands.

Christmas markets are a tradition of European cities, being a great opportunity to discover local customs and purchase traditional products sold at Christmas stands. This year, the Christmas market stands welcome their guests with Christmas decorations, clothing, toys, specific foods and shows designed to celebrate Christmas.
Budapest opened its Christmas markets on November the 16th. The stands will be present in Vörösmarty Square, in front of St. Stephen's Basilica, Franz Liszt Square and near the Allee Shopping Centre. The Christmas markets in Budapest will be open until December 31st.
The tradition of Christmas markets in Vienna goes back more than seven centuries. This year, Christmas markets in Vienna open on the 17th of November. The markets are located in Rathaus Square, Maria Theresien Square, Karlsplatz, Riesenradplatz, Freyung, Am Hof, in front of the Belvedere Palaces, Schönbrunn and Hof, in front of the Mariahilf church, on the place of the Former General Hospital, Spittelberg district. The Christmas markets are open until December 23rd. The Christmas markets in Riesenradplatz and from in front of the Schönbrunn Palace are open until December 31st, 2012 and January 1st, 2013.
Salzburg opens its Christmas markets from November 22nd. They are housed by squares Domplatz, Mirabell, Sterngarten, in front of the Hellbrunn Palace and inside the court of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Also in the surroundings of Salzburg you can visit the Christmas market near Lake Wolfgang, near Church St. Leonhard and in Oberndorf. The markets are open until December 23rd and 24th.
The Christmas markets in Munich are open from November 30th. They will remain open until December 24th. The markets can be found in the following locations: Marienplatz, Sendlinger Tor, Chinesicher Tur, Schwabing, Haidhausen, Wittelsbacher Platz, Theresienwiese.
The city of Berlin hosts more than 50 Christmas markets. However, the most important are those in Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer and Breitscheidplatz, in front of Rathaus, near Opernpalais on Unter den Linden. All these markets are free to visit. If you want to visit the Christmas market in Gendarmenmarkt, you are required to pay an entrance fee. Berlin's Christmas markets are open from November 26th to December 31st.
Frankfurt is famous for its Christmas market which takes place in the surroundings of the City Hall, more exactly in Römerberg, Paulsplatz and Mainkai. The official opening of the market takes place on November 26th. The Christmas market welcomes visitors with over 200 stands and a 28 meter tall tree, decorated with over 5,000 lights.
The Christmas market in Nuremberg is one of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe. It takes place in Hauptmarkt, from November 30th  to December 24th.
Close to Nuremberg you can visit the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The Christmas market in this town is famous mainly because of the beauty of the whole setting. The Christmas Museum in Rothenburg is open all year round. The Christmas market takes place from November 30th  to December 23th.
The city of Cologne organizes spectacular Christmas markets from November 26th to December 23rd. The markets are held in front of Cologne Cathedral, in Neumarkt Square and Rudolfplatz, in Old Town, the city port and Stadtgarden.
The Christmas markets in Prague open on the 1st December. The most important markets take place in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Other Christmas markets can be found in squares like Havel, Republic, Peace, Jiřího z Poděbrad and Holešovice Exhibition Grounds. The markets are open until December 23rd.
Other big cities like London, Paris, Copenhagen, Stocklom, Helsinki, Zurich, open their Christmas markets from the 20th of November. The markets are open until January 6th, 2013, at the most.
