Depression Comes to Dormont: An Evening of Independent Film

Offbeat independent comedy filmed paired with Eddie Presley in double feature

PRLog - Nov. 21, 2012 - PITTSBURGH -- On Friday, December 7, the Hollywood Theater in Dormont will host the Pittsburgh-area premier of "Depression: The Movie," the offbeat new comedy from indie auteur Henrique Couto. Best known as a director of gory, micro-budget horror films, Couto breaks from his horror roots with this new dark comedy featuring musicians, actors, and filmmakers from his home own of Dayton, Ohio.

"Depression: The Movie" tells the story of four hapless characters existing in a world that refuses to cut them any slack. Lenny falls in love with just about every woman he meets. Bruce's estranged father is destroying his life by doing absolutely nothing. Bill wants to figure out how to love again after his divorce. George wants to prove she isn't a giant screw-up by babysitting for her successful older sister. Each of them wade through life's disasters, struggling to get past their biggest obstacles: themselves.

Showing with "Depression: The Movie" is director Jeff Burr's rarely-seen cult favorite "Eddie Presley." Eddie is a down-on-his-luck ex-Elvis impersonator. But his luck is about to change when he's offered a comeback gig at a seedy Hollywood nightclub…until he has a breakdown on stage and gives the audience a powerful, improvised performance they'll not soon forget. A bittersweet drama about life at the bottom of the entertainment food chain, based on the play by star Duane Whitaker ("Pulp Fiction," "From Dusk Till Dawn 2").

"Depression: The Movie" and "Eddie Presley" embody the true spirit of independent filmmaking. Made without studio backing, both films were produced by a small group of dedicated individuals committed to a genuine labor of love. Two distinct films, made more than 20 years apart, yet both share a common theme: the belief that perseverance, hope, and humor can overcome despair...sometimes.

Doors open at 7:30 PM. First feature at 8:00 PM, followed by a brief Q&A session with director Couto. Second feature will begin at approximately 9:45 PM. Admission is $10.

The Hollywood Theater is located at 1449 Potomac Avenue in Pittsburgh's Dormont neighborhood. The theater is available to rent for parties, meetings, fundraisers, film screenings, etc. For more information about the theater, including directions, visit http://www.thehollywooddormont.org
