Encouraging team work and business acumen in future entrepreneurs

Nov. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- To mark Entrepreneurship Week 2012 from 12-18 November, Bishop’s Move, which has been in business itself for 150 years, went back to college to work with Sussex Downs College AS Business Studies students as they took part in a series of activities designed to strengthen their enterprising skills.

Global Entrepreneurship Week is designed to inspire people to pursue their ideas, create jobs and build global ambition amongst students and business owners alike. Last year’s event in the UK saw 2,305 activities take place, reaching 213,000 people. Activities range from enterprise competitions to talks from local role models to large scale conferences.

During the week, Chris Marshall, Marketing Director at the UK’s largest family-owned removals company, gave a talk to the Sussex Downs students about his experiences of working for Bishop’s Move, emphasising the importance of team work and problem solving in order to be successful.

The students were then put through their paces, working in groups to solve a number of problems, including an emergency situation. With the help of storage boxes donated by Bishop’s Move, the students were asked to work as a team to create a shelter from nuclear dust falling after an explosion at a nearby nuclear plant. The Bishop’s Move team were on hand throughout to offer advice and guidance to the students as they worked to find a solution to the problem.

Chris comments: “We were delighted to be asked back to Sussex Downs to be involved with their activities during Global Entrepreneurship Week. Such initiatives are ideal for giving young people hands-on experience of what it is like to work as part of a team to achieve a common goal – something that is vital to learn if they are to be successful entrepreneurs. By speaking to the students about our own experiences of working for a family-run company that was founded over 150 years ago we hope that we have helped to inspire them to aim high and believe that anything is possible as long as you work hard and be the best you can be.”

Other local businesses that participated in the event included Brighton-based digital marketing experts SiteVisibility, Robert Griffin Photography, Lewes District Council, Viva Lewes, Mayo Wynn Baxter Solicitors  and Ape Creative.
