Visit westernvirginialandtrust.org/ Land+Link provides a unique opportunity for local artists to capture images of southwest Virginia’s beautiful landscape and receive recognition for their work. This is the second-year the Western Virginia Land Trust and the O. Winston Link Museum have partnered to put on the competition. “We have been incredibly impressed by the quality of entries in this competition,” The Western Virginia Land Trust is a community-based, private, non-profit organization. The land trust works to promote the conservation of western Virginia’s natural resources–farms, forests, waterways and rural landscapes. Qualified by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, it covers seven counties including: Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Montgomery, and Roanoke; and currently protects more than 15,000 acres of land and 33 miles of streams in 40 conservation easements. From 1955 to 1960, Brooklyn photographer, Winston Link, traveled to photograph and document the end of the steam locomotive era on the Norfolk and Western Railway- the last major line to exclusively operate under steam power. During those five years, Link captured more than 2,400 images. The O. Winston Link Museum exhibits this body of work as well as the history of the N&W Railway. Artifacts, films and interactive displays compliment the more than 250 dramatic black and white and color photographs taken throughout the Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.
