Short Story Competition Brings Together the Visual and the Literary

Dec. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- Brunswick, ME - Shanti Arts Publishing and the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance are collaborating to sponsor a writing competition that brings together the visual and the literary arts. Maine writers are invited to submit short stories based on the paintings of Maine artist Leslie Anderson. The paintings are from her series called Summer Stories. Anderson works with landscapes, still life, and the general beauty that can be found in coastal and colloquial Maine. Shanti Arts Publishing will publish a book of the paintings and the winning stories in fall 2013.  

Judging the competition will be award-winning author Ron Currie, Jr. The New York Times has said Currie is a “startlingly talented writer whose book [Everything Matters!] will pay no heed to ordinary narrative conventions… He survives the inevitable, apt comparisons to Kurt Vonnegut and writes in a tenderly mordant voice of his own.”  Currie is a resident of Maine.  

Those wishing to participate should select one of Anderson's paintings, which are viewable at www.shantiarts.co, and write a short story inspired by the painting. Writers also need to submit a completed registration form and a non-refundable submission fee of $15. Further important details are available at www.shantiarts.co or www.mainewriters.org.

This contest is open to all Maine residents aged 18 and older.  Submissions are being accepted now and remain open until March 1st, 2013.  Winners will be notified by May 15th, 2013.  The book release is scheduled for fall 2013.  Winners receive a $50 honorarium in the form of a gift certificate and copies of the book.
