Tacoma's Reclamation Candle Company Launches Mandles, Candles for Men that Just Make Scents

Nov. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- No longer must men be subjected to candle aromas that appeal primarily to women. Now men can opt to burn candles that appeal to their manly 'scents'abilities thanks to a new line of candles created in scents men love to smell. Mandles™, designed by husband and wife team Tammi and Barney Loucks, owners of Reclamation Candle Company, initially started as a joke.

“There are a few candles I made for the store that my husband just didn’t care for, such as lavender,” explained Tammi Loucks. “But as a candle maker, I have to sell candles that appeal to my primarily female customers. I cut the lavender with vanilla – it smells fantastic. But my husband still complained about the lavender, so I said ‘no worries, honey, I’ll make you a bacon candle – a real man candle. I was joking – but Barney was thrilled with the idea of man candles.”  Mandles were born.

While there are several candle brands designed specifically for men, the majority of them are novelty, available in scents such as engine oil and farts. The Loucks’ goal was to design a line of candles that could be burned on a daily basis in scents that appeal to men, but that both men and women could enjoy.

“Candles are great aromatherapy,” said Loucks, “But it’s hard to relax and enjoy your candle if your partner is complaining about ‘that smell’.”

Mandles are currently available in 10 scents including Peary-licious (a mouthwatering Bartlett Pear), Teakwood & Cardamom, Pumpkin Lager, The Great Outdoors, Skinny Dip, Bamboo & White Grapefruit, Cup ‘O Joe – and of course, Bacon, made with real bacon.

All Mandles are ‘Barney-approved’ prior to being sold in the store. Except for one of the more popular scents, Monkey Farts.

“Tammi said she was making monkey farts, and I said ‘that’s not a man candle!’” laughed Barney Loucks. “But my wife, a 15-year marketing veteran, said curiosity would draw people into the store. She was right. People see it in the window and laugh and dare each other to go in and smell it. I won’t divulge what it smells like – come try it for yourself. But it’s one of our best sellers.”
