Nov. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- The Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness youth and adult competition teams finished up a winning late Summer and Fall season, with success in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.

In August several team members attended the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association’s (IBJJF) International Boston Open, where all three Nexus competitors took home medals: John Murphy and Anick Bernier winning Gold and Ivan Garrido winning a Bronze.

Next the team attended the September Grapplers Quest tournament in Boston, where once again every competitor medaled in the competition. John Murphy earned Gold in both Gi and No Gi (including a Championship Belt); Anick Bernier won Gold in No Gi and Bronze in Gi; Tiffiney Barlow won the Gold in No Gi; Eric Crockett won a Silver in No Gi; Jaimie Ponte won Silver in the Gi, and Ivan Garrido and Manuel Luz won Bronze medals.

Standout John Murphy then went on to complete his undefeated streak by winning another Gold medal in the IBJJF Pan Ams, one of the highest level international tournaments in the world.

The Jiu-Jitsu tournament season finished with a small team, mostly of Nexus youth students, attending the recent North American Grappling Association tournament. Among the youth medalists were William Kemp (Silver medal); Dennis Dye (2 Golds); Brady Lapierre (2 Silvers); Evan Rink (Silver and Bronze); Riley Reed (Silver and Bronze); David Appleton (Silver and Bronze); Logan Grajales (Silver and Bronze); Andrew Lecuyer (3 Golds and Silver. Also competing for the Adults was Anick Bernier, who won another Gold and a Silver medal.

Finally, two Nexus Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Team members went undefeated at the Cage Titans FC event held in Plymouth. Jacob Weeks made a spectacular debut, winning in just 0:38 seconds of round one, and Jeff Perez won via unanimous decision.

Nexus Chief Instructor and Head Coach, Stephen Whittier, states: “Although a lot of people come to us for self-defense and fitness or to have their kids improve their confidence, we also get 5 – 10% of our students who have competition goals. They work really hard and have a great attitude, and it’s really rewarding to see the success everyone has had.”
