breath to become a National Record holder just months after donning a monofin for the first time. Submerged for 3 minutes and 21 seconds, Tanc rehearsed the final stages of the dive scores of times to be sure of a clean exit and ‘white card’ (no penalty) performance. “I knew it would be tough, because with the added pressure of a record performance, I had extra nerves. The tiniest mistake and the dive would have been over.”
Tanc moved to the US in 2005 and soon came to fame as Rory Gilmore's friend on the cult TV show Gilmore Girls. He has since appeared in multiple television shows (Mentalist, CSI: Miami, 90210, CSI: New York) and films, recently working alongside Nicolas Cage in the action-thriller Stolen.
Freediver and 2011 World Champion Jody Fisher commented: “I saw footage of Tanc’s first competition dive in August and knew he was a big talent – it was obvious that it would only be a matter of time before he set one or more records. And there are many areas of his diving where he can develop further, so he’s barely touched on his potential. It’s exciting because we have some exceptionally gifted athletes entering the sport, and, for the first time, have the breadth to form an internationally competitive Australian Team.”
With one record under his belt and a #6 international ranking for the year, Tanc has set his sights on attending the 2013 AIDA Individual Pool World Championships, which will be held in Serbia in June.
