BBB Scam Alerts for November 2012

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 14, 2012 - RALEIGH, N.C. (November 14, 2012) — In an effort to keep the public informed, Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina offers monthly Scam Alerts:

BBB warns about a recent e-mail scam that claims to come from Delta Air Lines. Consumers are receiving e-mails that state the recipient has purchased a Delta ticket and that his or her invoice is attached to the e-mail. These e-mails were not sent by Delta Air Lines. If you do receive an e-mail, Delta recommends changing your SkyMiles account pin immediately and to monitor your account for any misuse. It is also important for consumers to avoid clicking on any links or attachments in the e-mail, and to delete the e-mail immediately.

BBB is warning consumers to be wary of e-mails that claim to be from the National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA) regarding ACH payment transactions. The e-mail states that “your money transfer has been canceled” and provides an attachment with additional details. BBB warns that this is a virus, and consumers should avoid clicking on any links or attachments. If you receive a suspicious e-mail claiming to be from NACHA, please contact abuse@nacha.org.

BBB has received numerous calls regarding a text message offering gift cards from large retailers such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy. BBB warns that this is a scam and urges consumers to avoid responding to the message or clicking on any links. In most cases, the text message claims that the consumer has won a $1,000 gift card to the store and instructs the consumer to follow a link to claim the gift card. Once the user clicks on the link, he or she is asked for personal information that could be used to steal his or her identity.

BBB warns that scam artists are calling consumers and stating they have won a free vacation from a drawing they entered last year. The scam artists tell consumers to come by their office to discuss details, but when the consumers arrive they are asked to give their personal information. Consumers are also typically asked for their credit card number to pay for airline fees. BBB reminds consumers to use caution when asked to provide any credit card information or other personal information. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
