The first annual “Dr. G’s MCI Student Culinary Cook Off” has been integrated into the Institute’s fall curriculum and encompasses six teams of two students each. Two teams will be competing to create healthy, sensible breakfast menus; two teams for lunch; and two teams for dinner options. The five-week competition will be videotaped and streamed on the Miami Culinary Institute’s public TV station, and will culminate in a cook-off and awards presentation on November 27th.

“This competition goes way beyond a classroom project and a winning prize,” explained John Richards of MCI. “Dr. Goldsmith worked with very closely with our chefs and educators to develop criteria for the menus so that each meets his stringent standards of nutritious meals. It is our hope the students take what they discover and create from the process and integrate it into their own individual cooking styles, because it is imperative that a healthy lifestyle is not only for those who want to lose weight.”
“Over the years, research has changed the way we understand diet and nutrition,” added Dr. Goldsmith. “We are constantly reviewing the information and using it to refresh our menus so they incorporate the optimal amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fat to stimulate weight loss and develop lifelong healthy eating habits.”
He continued, “We recognize that it is often challenging for people to find foods that are not only nutritious, but taste good and look appetizing. That’s where the students come in. We’re looking for meals that are simple for our customers to recreate at home.”
Judging will be based on presentation, taste, sense of ease, and nutritional value. The winner will win an Apprenticeship under a high-profile local chef, and will be featured in Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness promotional pieces. The winning meal plans will also be integrated into Dr. G’s weight loss programs as fresh ideas for at-home menu options.
