SGS Conducts Safety Management and Supervision Services for Mumbai Metro Project

In September 2012, SGS was awarded a contract estimated to be in effect until July, 2013 to provide safety audit, safety management and supervision services for the construction of a metro project in Mumbai by Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL). SGS will be responsible for the safety auditing and management as well as supervision services for the construction of 12 kilometers of double line elevated standard gauge metro rail and twelve passenger station platforms along the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) corridor and one maintenance depot to be located at D.N. Nagar in Andheri(W).

When assessing project logistics, it was of utmost importance for Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL) (http://www.mumbaimetroone.com/), a joint venture made up of Reliance Infrastructure, Veolia Transport and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which operates the Mumbai Metro, to have a professional, experienced partner in order to ensure the safe and successful completion and operation of the VAG line. Due to the SGS distinguished global reputation as a third party inspection, testing, verification and certification company as well as prior MMOPL / SGS health, safety and environment (HSE) 2010 and 2011 collaborations in performing periodic safety audits of the major contracting agencies serving the VAG corridor project, there was never any real question as to whom MMOPL would approach to assist in the next phases of VAG.

SGS Protecting Workers and Assets

On September 11, 2012 a five-member SGS safety team conducted a one-time comprehensive safety audit of the entire project. The key audit findings were then presented by the SGS inspection team and an interim report was submitted to MMOPL senior project management in a close-out meeting on September 12. MMOPL immediately implemented major recommendations outlined in the initial SGS safety audit. Impressed by the quality of SGS audit observations, MMOPL project managers solicited SGS safety engineers to continuously monitor project safety on a full-time basis. On September 17, a dedicated full-time team of ten SGS safety engineers was deployed and, after consultation with MMOPL, subsequently increased to fourteen.

This SGS team of safety engineers based at the MMOPL project site in Mumbai assists project management (http://www.sgs.com/en/Industrial-Manufacturing/Services-R...) in implementing and monitoring a safety management system in order to effectively manage safety aspects and actively prevent incidents or accidents. SGS works with MMOPL site management and project contractors in placing control measures to eliminate potential hazards at the different work sites. In doing so, SGS provides MMOPL the opportunity to effectively manage and fulfill safety obligations during the project. Furthermore, SGS submits site safety inspection reports to MMOPL on a daily basis and protects workers from on-site injuries and assets from on-site damages through SGS safety management and supervision services.
