Nov. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- NEW YORK AND SALT LAKE CITY– Cycle Computing has been recognized in the annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, which will be presented at this week’s International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC12) in Salt Lake City. Cycle was honored with the editors’ choice in the “Best Use of HPC in the Cloud” category.

Cycle was recognized by the HPCwire editors for its 50,000-core utility supercomputer run in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud for Schrödinger and Nimbus Discovery to accelerate lead identification via virtual screening that lead to potential payoff in new cancer treatments. Tapping into Cycle’s utility supercomputing, Schrödinger ran a virtual screen of 21 million compounds against a protein target. Requiring 12.5 processor years, the run was completed in less than three hours.

The HPCwire awards hold the distinction of the most prestigious recognition given by the HPC community to its own each year. The winners are determined through online polling of the global HPCwire audience and through a rigorous selection process by a panel of editors and HPC luminaries.

“The life sciences industry is being transformed by cloud, and utility supercomputing specifically, and we’re honored to be recognized by HPCwire as a part of it through our work with Schrödinger, Nimbus Discovery and AWS,” said Jason Stowe, founder and CEO, Cycle Computing. “This run pushed the boundaries of computation research. It harvested the raw infrastructure of AWS to empower Schrödinger’s scientific accuracy in a massive cluster run of drug discovery computations that could bring significant breakthroughs for the treatment of cancer.”

“It’s an honor and a privilege to take time during the most important supercomputing conference globally to acknowledge the organizations and the individuals behind them who exemplify the hard work, dedication and effort that has taken place the past year to develop new technologies that ultimately benefit mankind”, said Jeff Hyman, president and group publisher, Tabor Communications Inc. “The awards represent the highest level of recognition to the leaders and luminaries in the high performance computing industry by our HPCwire readers and the community alike. Our warmest congratulations go out to all the recipients of this year’s awards.”
