Nov. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Event Rescheduled for Tuesday, November 27th at the Westchester County Center

WHITE PLAINS, NY – The Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has rescheduled its Westchester County Light The Night® event for Tuesday, November 27th from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Westchester County Center (198 Central Avenue) in White Plains, New York.  The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd at Playland Park in Rye, but had to be cancelled for safety reasons after Hurricane Sandy caused considerable damage to the park site. Those interested in participating and/or volunteering can visit www.lightthenight.org/wch or call 914.821.8362.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk funds lifesaving research and support for people battling cancer. Friends, families and co-workers form teams and millions of customers help by donating at retail outlets.  These efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in over two hundred communities each fall across North America.

“We are grateful to the Westchester County Parks & Recreation staff for allowing us to reschedule our Light The Night Walk at the County Center,” said Dennis Chillemi, Executive Director of the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of LLS. “Light The Night is our largest fundraising event of the year and we did not want to let down the thousands of participants, many of whom are patients themselves, who were looking forward to it.”

Each Light The Night Walk has at least one Honored Patient, a local survivor of blood cancer to whom LLS pays tribute.  This year’s Honored Patients include: eight-year-old Sabrina Marciante of South Salem, a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL); and Court Ingraham of Mahopac, a survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In addition, each Light The Night Walk has an In Memory Patient. In Memory Patients fill an inspirational role for Light The Night participants, teams, and sponsors who are raising money to find a cure for all blood cancers. This year’s In Memory Patient is Joseph Lorenz of Ossining, who lost his battle to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the summer of 2011.

These Honorees are examples of the sobering reality that every four minutes in this country someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every ten minutes, someone dies from the disease. Despite the successful advances in medical research, leukemia still claims the lives of more children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other cancer.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, based in White Plains, NY, is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. Funds raised from Light The Night provide significant support to these programs.  Last year, the three Westchester/Hudson Valley Walks included more than 7,000 walkers who collectively raised $887,000.  Nationally, Light The Night raised $50 million in 2011.
