Bimatoprost hair loss treatment shows promise

Nov. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- A study published in the past month shows that a bimatoprost hair loss treatment can effectively grow hair.

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal published a paper from Professor Randall at the university of Bradford.

The study used hair samples taken from men undergoing hair transplants in the UK. These samples were grown in culture and it was found that a bimatoprost hair loss treatment had the effect of boosting the rate and length of hair growth.

Bimatoprost is a prostamide agonist, which is means that it activates receptors that are naturally activated by prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemical messengers found naturally in the body that often regulate various cycles. In this case they regulate the hair growth cycle. By using the treatment you increase the positive signals to the hair cycle, increasing the rate of growth.
This study confirmed that prostamide receptors are present in scalp follicles and that activating them can help boost hair growth and negate hair loss in male pattern baldness.

Bimatoprost was originally used as a treatment for glaucoma but an interesting side effect was noticed - increased eyelash growth.
It has been available as a treatment for eyelash growth since 2007 from Mylash. Its medical director, Dr Tom Walker, believes that this evidence offers another avenue of use for the treatment:
