Troop  began in the late 1980s after they won a televised (Puttin' on the Hits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puttin%27_on_the_Hits)) talent contest that later drew interest from record labels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_label). Troop, consisting of childhood friends Steve Russell, Allen McNeil, John Harreld, Rodney Benford, and Reggie Warren, signed to Atlantic Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Records) and released their debut single Mamacita from their self titled album in 1988. Mamacita reached Number 2 on the Billboard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_magazine)'s R&B Charts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_R%26B/Hip-Hop_Songs).[1]

After the release of their debut album, Troop released Attitude, which included songs such as Spread My Wings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_My_Wings) and All I Do is Think of You (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_I_Do_is_Think_of_You) (a Jackson 5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_5) cover), which were both Number 1 on the Billboard R&B charts and remained in the top 10 on the charts for several weeks.[1] Attitude was certified platinum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platinum_album)[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troop_(band)#cite_note-3) in 1990, afterward, Troop released their third album Deepa in 1992 from which the single Sweet November made Number 1 on the Billboard's R&B charts.
