Nov. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Nov. 5, 2012 – Boomerang, a Y program serving Orange and Chatham County youth on short-term suspension from school, will be able to serve more teens as a result of two grants: $5,000 from Bank of America and $3,600 from Best Buy. The program, offered through the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA, offers young people a productive alternative to waiting out their suspension at home.

“We are grateful to Bank of America and Best Buy for their generosity,” says Tami Pfeifer, Boomerang director. “With their support we can continue our efforts to create spaces for all kids to rebound and reconnect with their community.”

Designed for middle and high school students, Boomerang is a resiliency-based program that helps each individual to identify, nurture and reinforce his or her own unique gifts and strengths. Participants reflect on the choices that are working well in their lives, as well as the challenges they face, and identify systems of support within their families, schools and communities. While participating with Boomerang, students communicate with their teachers to stay on track with their schoolwork, and engage in skill building sessions to identify short-term and long-term goals.

Boomerang is a collaborative effort between the Y, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, the Orange County Schools, the Orange County Juvenile Justice System and the community at large. In addition to the resiliency program for students, Boomerang also advocates for youth and provides resiliency-based training to others within the Orange County community and offers afterschool programming for at-risk youth.
