Australia Seeks Health Care Professionals to Meet Growing Demands

Nearly half of all health care professionals are 45 or older, and most of these will be leaving the medical profession in the next two decades. Projections suggest that the influx of new workers will not be able to keep pace with the growing needs.

 
PRLog - Nov. 9, 2012 - One of Australia’s largest industries is the heath care industry, accounting for 11 percent of the total workforce, or 1.2 million people. Yet, in spite of these impressive numbers, there is currently a serious shortage of health care workers in Australia. One of the primary reasons for this shortage is that the average age of the Australian population is increasing, resulting in greater health care demands over the next few decades. At the same time, the average age of the medical work force is also increasing. Nearly half of all health care professionals are 45 or older, and most of these will be leaving the medical profession in the next two decades. So despite an increase in medical students graduating from universities, projections suggest that the influx of these new workers simply will not be able to keep pace with the growing needs.

The majority of shortages in the health care industry are for doctors and nurses. In the nursing profession alone it is estimated that there is a shortage of 10,000 to 12,000 nurses. Other shortages occur in areas of supportive staff such as nursing assistants, medical records, lab technicians, and therapists. The bottom line is that even significant medical recruitment efforts targeting native Australians will not provide enough of an increase in work force to meet the projected needs. Therefore, the Australian government and health care agencies are seeking ways to attract foreign medical professionals to help bridge the gap.

These foreign recruitment efforts are already seeing success. In 2007, about 25 percent of all Australian health care workers were immigrants, and that percentage is expected to increase significantly over the next decade. To help facilitate this process, Australian immigration offers several different programs for medical professionals to obtain a work permit.

One program is the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program, which is designed for professionals and skilled immigrants who are not currently sponsored by an employer, but have specific job skills that are in demand, such as medical jobs. Jobs already on the official Skilled Occupation List include registered nurses and general medical practitioners.

As already mentioned, nurses are in particularly high demand. For this reason, it is possible for a nurse who wishes to immigrate to Australia, or simply work there for a few years, to obtain a visa fairly quickly. Of course, there are some standard qualifications that must be met. All nursing candidates must be in good health and have an appropriate level of experience and education. Potential nurses must also be assessed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC), or by the local State or Territorial regulatory body.

Medical Practitioner Visas are available on a temporary basis and allow hospitals, medical centers, and private practices to sponsor doctors to work in Australia for a period of time up to four years. This type of visa covers a wide range of medical jobs including doctors, radiologists, or specialists in a variety of fields. Medical practitioners who are under 45 years of age and have a combined six years of training and relevant work experience may also be eligible for a permanent visa through this program.
