Follow on Google News | Barbara Kopple’s New Documentary Fight to Live at DOC NYC Film FestivalTwo time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple (Harlan Country USA, American Dream) explores in her new documentary Fight to Live the absolute powers of the FDA over our rights and access to therapies needed to fight deadly diseases.
When breakthroughs in diseases like cancer are lost or delayed by an insurmountable approval process – the cost is tallied in human lives. Through an intimate journey with patients, physicians, innovators, advocates and regulators, Kopple exposes the regulatory barrier in the development process and patient access to treatments against deadly diseases. This important film brings to light a battle that many American’s don’t even know is being forged. Fight to Live is about saving lives - possibly saving your life, or the life of someone you love. With one in two men and one in three women being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, not including the possibility of being diagnosed with other deadly diseases like ALS, Parkinson’s, or Alzheimer’s, this is an issue that effects most of us. The organization that goes by the same name as the film, The Fight to Live Coalition, brings public awareness around our rights and barriers to beating deadly diseases and the need for FDA reform so that the current advancements in medicine will be available when any of us need them. Congressman Brian Bilbray of San Diego California is calling for support of needed FDA reform in the Patient Choice Act of 2012, (H.R.6288) that safely brings earlier access to promising new treatments that could potentially save thousands of lives. With the right reform, patients should be able to make an informed choice with their physicians when fighting a terminal disease. Fight to Live asks the question: Should your rights and decisions in a battle against a deadly disease be made by you or dictated by the FDA? Fight to Live is a wake up call to Americans – most of whom will one day find themselves or a loved on in a fight to live. See the movie and meet the producers and the innovators on Saturday, November 10th at 4:15pm.
