The commission’s environment committee considered a proposal to add harvested wood products greenhouse gas accounting rules for the first time. Drawing greater attention to the timber frame house manufactures.
The proposal, which needs agreement by both the European Parliament and the European Council, could eventually see EU member states including these new rules in their wider climate change mitigation strategies and developing incentive schemes. This legislation would create incentives for developers to look to timber frame manufactures as is already the case in Finland.
Known for being pioneers as timber frame manufactures and in sustainable building, Finland have constructed their largest timber frame design building. The 104 flat development is made up of five buildings, each with three or four floors and a total floor area of 6,300m2.
Such developments are traditionally built by less sustainable steel frames. This project looks to have paved the way for timber frame manufactures such as Rob Roy Homes look to larger timber frame designs. The building is made from a Kerto structured beam and post frame, intermediate floors, roofing panels and exterior walls delivered as timber frame designs.
It was noted by one of the senior timber frame manufactures that "The frame and intermediate floor phase was accomplished very quickly because there was no drying related to concrete construction."
The use of timber frame designs looks to become increasingly common thanks to the advances in design as well as the environmental benefits.
