C&S Wholesale Grocers Responds After Hurricane Sandy with Support for Relief Efforts

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 7, 2012 - C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. responded quickly after Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, leaving millions of people without electricity up and down the eastern seaboard, destroying homes, halting public transportation and flooding streets.

To take action and help others in need, C&S Wholesale Grocers is working in partnership with Feeding America, the country's largest hunger relief organization. Feeding America is part of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (www.NVOAD.org) and in turn works collaboratively with groups such as the American Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army, Humane Society of the United States, plus faith-based organizations, professional organizations including the American Logistics Aid Association, and state and federal government.

The company’s post-storm response took shape through a number of initiatives:

Food

Within days, three tractor trailer loads of food – approximately 150,000 pounds – were donated to Feeding America member food banks in areas hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. One headed to the Connecticut Food Bank (www.ctfoodbank.org) in East Haven, CT; they support 600 emergency food agencies in six counties. A second went to City Harvest (www.cityharvest.org) in New York City; they have operated for more than 30 years and supply 600 agencies. A third truckload was delivered to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey in Hillside, NJ (www.njfoodbank.org) and to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in Neptune, NJ (www.foodbankmoc.org). All are operating in partnership with local organizations and first responders.

The items C&S donated have been specifically requested by Feeding America and include bottled water, soup, peanut butter, granola and power bars, chili, beef stew, diapers, and cleaning products.

Medical Supplies

In collaboration with the National Business Aviation Association’s Humanitarian Emergency Response Operator (HERO) program, C&S donated and delivered 600 pounds of medical and health supplies, including children’s acetaminophen, ibuprofen, neomycin/bacitracin, hydrocortisone cream, hydrogen peroxide, bandages and wraps to New Jersey charities.

Funds

C&S Wholesale Grocers made a financial contribution to the national American Red Cross in support of immediate disaster relief efforts.
