Nov. 7, 2012 - PRLog -- SAN MATEO, CA—(November 7, 2012)— C.W. Driver’s Northern California office announced today that it has been named general contractor for the construction of a new education center for the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. The $25 million education center is being funded by general obligation bonds approved by district voters in 2006 and will be located in Sunnyvale at the former Onizuka Air Force Station near Moffett Business Park.

“We are excited to be working with Foothill-De Anza on this project,” said Mike Castillo, Senior Vice President of the Northern California Region for C.W. Driver. “Our strong background in community college work and our proven track record with higher educational facilities gives us the expertise to deliver this project successfully. We are proud to be an integral part of creating this new center.”

C.W. Driver has completed many other community college projects, including those for the Los Angeles Community College District, Coast Community College District, Desert Community College District, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, Palomar Community College District, Rancho Santiago Community College District and San Diego Community College District.

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District will acquire 9.2 acres of former Onizuka Air Force Station’s property at no cost through the public benefit conveyance process under the Military Base Reuse and Preservation Act. The Veterans Administration and the City of Sunnyvale are developing other parts of the 23-acre site, with the city of Sunnyvale serving as the local redevelopment authority overseeing the planning for reuse of the Air Force property.

The education center project will require approximately three years to complete once the college district takes possession of the land and will be built to meet LEED® standards. Lionakis is the project architect.

The multi-story education center will house classrooms, conference rooms and administrative offices, as well as a food service area. The center will be surrounded by a courtyard, and will have ample parking for students and faculty at the site. The education center provides opportunities for academic programs and workforce training, as well as year-round services.
