Nov. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- MIAMI, FL.: On Sunday, Nov. 11th, 2012 the Friends of the Japanese Garden and the City of Miami will present two traditional Japanese rituals, Shichigosan. This ritual is the rite of passage, and a festival day, in Japan for seven, five and three year old children and Niinamesai (Great Festival of Thanksgiving) traditionally performed by the newly crowned Emperor of Japan.

The event will take place at the Ichimura Miami-Japan Garden, located at 1101 MacArthur Causeway, adjacent to JUNGLE ISLAND. Doors open at 10am.

During Shichigosan, the children dress in Kimono and visit Shinto Shrines to pray for a safe and healthy upbringing.  Participants receive Chitose Ame, literally “thousand year candy”, a long, thin, red and white candy, which symbolizes healthy growth and longevity. It is given in a bag with a crane and turtle on it, which represent long life in Japan. The candy is wrapped in an edible rice paper film.

Niinamesai is the most important Shinto rite which is performed in order to make an offering of the first fruits of the year’s grain harvest thanking the deities for their blessing and also sharing the food produced by these first grains with the deities.

The Friends of the Japanese Garden are bringing in a Shinto Priest to perform this ceremony. “This is the third time this Ritual is being celebrated in the United States and it is a rare opportunity for Miami residents to participate in this authentic Shinto ritual,” says Agnes Youngblood, Chairwoman of the event.

The Fushu Daiko (Taiko Drummers) will perform several times throughout the day. Exhibit tents, will feature a variety of Japanese games, Ikebana demonstrations for adults and kids, cooking demonstrations, and the always popular Children’s corner where children will learn origami, Japanese art and traditional games. There will be a Gift shop and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Parking: Public parking across the street from the Garden or in the JUNGLE ISLAND parking garage, only $5.00 with FJG Parking pass, available at the Garden entrance. The Garden entrance is across from the Marina.

The Festival is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of Commissioners.
