CampWILD is a five-day training camp for people with diabetes in cycling, triathlon, running or walking for adults age 18 or over with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are looking for guidance and support for how to exercise with diabetes with expert athletic, diabetes, nutrition and mental skills coaches. Camp will be held in Boulder, Colorado, June 19 – 23, 2013.

CampWILD Director and TeamWILD Founder, Mari Ruddy, created CampWILD because as a person with diabetes she loved exercising with others with diabetes and she wanted to have that experience every year and with expert athletic and diabetes coaches who would help her get to the next level of wellness and fitness.

As Mari puts it, “It’s transformative and fun to ride bikes, run, walk, hike, swim and learn alongside others who care as much about diabetes and their health as I do.”

CampWILD provides the opportunity for people with diabetes to work side by side with expert coaches, expert diabetes educators, sports dietitians and mental skills coaches who work using a solution-focused, integrated approach in a live, person-to-person setting.  Friends, family members and other “type 3 supporters” are also welcome to attend CampWILD.

“CampWILD is a fantastic time to connect with other people with diabetes. The kind of information you get at CampWILD, integrating all the athletic and diabetes info in this way, can't be found elsewhere.” - Past CampWILD Attendee

Topics to be explored include:

·         Exercise Physiology and Why it Matters When You Have Diabetes

·         Understanding Insulin & Medications for Exercise

·         How to Use Food as Fuel

·         Carbs and Why It’s Ok to Love Them When You Are an Endurance Athlete with Diabetes

·         Bike Handling Skills for Cyclists & Triathletes

·         Run and Walk Form for Efficiency

·         There is no such thing as a hill – the Psychology of Suffering

CampWILD attendees can be of nearly any physical fitness level.  You just have to want to be active and have the desire to learn about diabetes and fitness.  The diabetes and nutrition team at CampWILD is headed by Marcey Robinson, MS, RD, CDE, BC-ADM and Jennifer Smith, RD, CDE, both of whom have extensive diabetes and exercise experience, including coaching countless diabetic athletes to top athletic performance for Ironman and other endurance sporting events.

CampWILD has three tracks: cycling, triathlon or run/walk.  All campers will participate in diabetes, nutrition, sport specific and mental skills clinics throughout the fast-paced five day camp experience.  Head Athletic Coach of CampWILD is Jarrod Fritch from Australia and is the TeamWILD triathlon coach.

In addition to expert diabetes and athletic coaching, TeamWILD and CampWILD value Mental Skills to get the brain of the diabetic athlete to the start and finish line along with the body, thus Coach Ginger Vieira of TeamWILD and Living-In-Progress will be at CampWILD to guide campers to top mental performance.

“If you're interested in learning more about your diabetes than you have in a long time, come to CampWILD with me next year. I learned how to manage my blood sugars during and after  exercise instead of dealing with "the fallout" as I did for so long. Meeting other people who live with diabetes everyday and want to be healthy and in control of their lives was so inspiring!” - Past CampWILD Attendee
