The American Presidents series illuminates the historical and contemporary presidency by publishing creative scholarly monographs that bring to bear on the presidency the perspectives of political science, history, and biography. Books in the series reveal new insights into the office of the presidency and the lives of particular presidents, the overlooked as well as the most famous. The series explores the office from a variety of theoretical and methodological vantage points. Whatever approach they take, all books in the series address questions of enduring significance about the nature, meaning, and consequences of the exercise of executive power.
Thomas Langston is chair of political science at Tulane University and also serves as feature editor of “The Historical Presidency” in Presidential Studies Quarterly.
