How Do You Let Go When the Election Is Over?

“People made it personal.” Conway explains “This was the most personally offensive election cycle ever. People used social media to attack the other side. They offended friends. They ticked off co-workers. They may even have lost customers!.”

Nov. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- Social media has made political season one of individuals attacking individuals.  Whole groups of people to which friends and family belong are derided in Facebook posts.  Attacks are launched via Twitter.  This election cycle has come complete with threats of death and warnings of pending riots.

Listen to a bunch of partisans talk to members of their own party, and they often have incredibly nasty things to say about the other party.  Put them on social media, and it seems everyone is out to eviscerate the other side.  The “other side” includes a lot of people on their “friends list.”  The “other side” includes people following and people being followed.  The personal venom has been incredible.

“I write books on how to let go, and even I have deleted people” says Conway.  “Some of them I like as people, but turn them loose about politics and they lose all reason.  Normally, you can talk to them.  Once they pick up an internet meme and claim it as true – there’s no evidence that will get them to change.”

Many people have done the same.  They have stopped following people.  They have unfriended others.  Some have been blocked.  Maybe some of this will be restored after Election Day.  Some relationships are simply over.  It isn’t even that they disagree politically that the relationship ends.  It’s that one or both in the relationship showed just how nasty, cruel, judgmental, and condescending they can be.  It is right that many of these relationship would end.

So how do we move on?  “We have to let it all go.  Considering how incredibly personal some of these attacks have become, it can be difficult to do.”  Some people have been attacked as stupid, unthinking, uncaring, deceived, immoral, or something.

Internet memes about the evils of the other party get started that have little or no basis in fact.  They get posted so many times that partisans treat them as self-evident truths.  Then they bash their political foes over the heads with their “facts.”  They get so far out of line, it’s scary.  Death threats?  Racial slurs?  Accusations of bigotry?  “You agree with me or you’re <fill in the epithet>!”

Conway teaches a Five Step Forgiveness system in his book, Freedom Found.  This Election Day, he is giving the book away for free.  “We’ll need to let go and move on,” he says.  “Learning how to let go is a must.”

The full title is: Freedom Found: Living the Art of Letting Go and Complete Forgiveness to Cleanse, Release and Find Total Freedom by Scot Conway.  Link directly to the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Freedom-Found-Complete-Forgiveness-ebook/dp/B0086QVUYA/ref=la_B009VNPT44_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1352096271&sr=1-3.

Besides his powerful “Five Step Forgiveness” system, Conway teaches other key lessons.  “Excusing is not forgiveness.  Making an excuse means ‘that’s okay,’ but it’s not okay.  That’s why you forgive!  You forgive because it’s not okay!”

Similarly, “understanding” is not forgiveness.  You can understand why someone did something, but wrong is wrong.  If someone was out of line, they were out of line.  Understanding the reason for it do not turn wrong into right.  They just mean you understand why the wrong happened.

Conway elaborates, “If you understand someone is ‘like that,’ then you learn to expect it from him.  If he makes excuses, too, then he’s telling you ‘I do this.  Expect it.’  Then it’s up to you to decide what kind of relationship you want with someone like that.  Maybe some.  Maybe none at all!”

“By all means I think people should be able to be friends with people of different political beliefs.  With the introduction of social media and internet memes into the equation, people need to learn civility all over again.  They need to learn how to disagree agreeably.  They need to learn how to have discussions rather than just make attacks.  This is the first time such vitriolic politics has played out in social media like this.  Hopefully, we, as a society, will learn before the next time.”

Some people have jokingly asked for “block political posts” privacy options.  One would like to think such a thing would not be necessary.  Then again, that may end up being the answer in 2016.  We shall see!

Get Conway’s book to learn how to let go.  This is especially important if some of the worst offenders are people you otherwise have a relationship with!  Maybe you need to let go of comments made by employers or managers.  Maybe you need to let go of comments made by customer or vendors.  Maybe you just need to put all the nastiness of the campaign season behind you and put all of it in it’s proper place.

The book is free on Amazon.com on Election Day and for a day or two after (depending upon your time zone).  Get it for your Kindle, your Kindle App, or store it with Amazon and read it “in the cloud.”  (That just means the book and the reader are stored on Amazon, and you can read it in any browser.)
