Follow on Google News | Do we misuse the two F- Words?MOUTH FULL - a collection of poems and essays By Sweta Srivastava Vikram
“As a feminine feminist, I am proud to give credit when deserved.” When a few months ago Sweta , as part of her status update, posted a quote on Facebook: ‘For most of history, Anonymous was a woman’, the words written by Virginia Woolf ; it seemed apt to share along with her radio interview and video clips of a reading in New York City, where she was a featured poet. Much to her shock, the post received several comments and multiple ‘likes’. In her new book, Mouth Full, Sweta chronicles the emotional journey of modern-day immigrants as they move to a new country, assimilate in the culture, and learn a different way of life. Somewhere in all of that movement, the experiences teach them to see the strengths and weaknesses of both the home-land and acquired land. Told from the perspective of a modern- day Indian immigrant as social questions, observations, and commentary, the essays and poems are funny, bold, sassy and uninhibited. ‘In my world a woman’s mouth is filled with syllables of convienience- sometimes to dump filth, sometimes to get absolved of sins.’ Sweta is an award-winning writer, two times Pushcart Prize nominated poet, novelist, author, essayist, colomnist, and educator. She reads her work, teaches creative writing workshops, and gives talks at universities and schools across the globe.
