Bishop Lionel Gendron, Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil, will celebrate the mass at St. Joseph’s Oratory on Mount Royal in Montreal to mark the historic occasion. The first Native woman to be named a saint, St. Kateri was canonized on October 21, 2012 in Rome by Pope Benedict XVI.
Born to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin Christian mother in what is today New York State, St. Kateri lived a life of Christian piety inspiring people by her example to this very day. She died in 1680 at the age of 24, spending the last years of her life in what is today Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada.
