"It's an honor to be chosen as president of Guardians of Angels, and to serve on their Board of Directors, Attorney Dow said. "They are a fine group of people with an admirable mission to build an Animal Adoption Center to serve Chatham County." Attorney Dow has been on the board for a number of months, and was chosen by the Board as president because of his leadership experience and legal expertise. Karen Allen, Ed.D., provost of Central Carolina Community College, is focusing on the Community Relations team. "I am pleased to lend my knowledge of Chatham County to help Guardians of Angels in their mission to build an Animal Adoption Center," said Dr. Allen. "I think it is as important for community economic development and quality of life as it is for homeless cats and dogs." Allen is known for her visionary leadership at Central Carolina CC leading it to be at the forefront with "green education", including sustainable agriculture, construction and biofuels; and starting in January, two programs in social media. Tom Waniewski, M.A. and principal of Waniewski Associates, has signed on as a PR consultant with the Grants and Foundations Team to work with grant submissions and relationships. http://waniewski.com/ A public relations consultant, Tom Waniewski said, "I've worked with Guardians of Angels' Terry Dorsey for years, and know him to be a man of integrity and determination. I am pleased to partner with Guardians in building relationships with foundations and grant providers to make the Animal Adoption Center in Chatham County a reality." Waniewski shares a passion for ending animal suffering: when he was an investigative reporter and producer, he was responsible for busting a four-state dog-fighting ring centered in Ohio's Lucas County. Retired Animal Control Director John Sauls suggested the idea of an animal adoption center. In a letter on the Guardians of Angels website, Sauls says that the Chatham County Animal Shelter simply does not have the room to keep adoptable animals long enough to see them adopted which is something an adoption center could do. http://www.guardiansofangels.org/ In 2010, even with significant efforts by rescue groups in the county and the Chatham County shelter, about 5 out of 10 dogs and 8 out of 10 cats were euthanized. Chairman of the Chatham County Board of Health, Bill Browder, a GOA Board member, has said, "Euthanasia of any animal is very concerning and is also very hard on the shelter employees." About the Guardians of Angels Animal Adoption Center Proposal: Plans for The Guardians of Angels' Adoption Center include giving cats and dogs enough time to be placed in life-long homes. The proposed center will have a warm pet and people friendly environment and will give adoptable, elderly and handicapped animals a place to thrive until they meet their life-long guardians. The plans also include a wildlife triage station since the closest wildlife rescue centers are in Asheboro, at the NC Zoo, www.nczoo.org/ Students, senior citizens and those training in the vet care field will help make the Adoption Center a thriving environment for animals with lots of play, interaction and love. Other centers in Wake and Orange County find that an adoption center is a great way to bring people together and that it elevates the care of pets, and the spirits of those around them, everywhere.
