Now in its 83rd year, the well-known Thanksgiving Day Annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony is a highly anticipated tradition, drawing dozens of locals and tourists alike each year. This year, the stage for the event has been moved to Nichols Road, west of Pennsylvania Avenue and will feature Matt Besler, Kei Kamara and Jimmy Nielsen of the Sporting Kansas City professional soccer team flipping the switch that turns on all the lights at 6:50 p.m.
Spectators are encouraged to arrive early or stay late to shop and enjoy a range of activities which include live performances by KSHB-TVs “Sounds of The Holiday” choir, finalists and previous winners from the KC Superstar singing competition, prize giveaways and a concert featuring the Celtic-American rock group, The Elders. After the official ceremony, the KCP&L Plaza Lights will remain lit 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day through January 13, 2013.
